Comparison between AutoSSL and paid SSL Certificate

This articles points out the differences between AutoSSL and paid SSL certificates.

  • AutoSSL certificates do not offer warranty in case of compromisation.
  • AutoSSL certificates last for 90 days and automatically renew when they are due.
  • AutoSSL certificates do not offer support from the Certification Authority.
  • In order to have your AutoSSL certificate issued, your hosting provider must have your domain registered.
  • AutoSSL certificates do not support Extended Validation (EV - Green Bar).
  • AutoSSL certificates do not support wildcards. 
  • AutoSSL certificates support the following subdomains, including your naked domain:
    • <your_domain> 
    • www.<your_domain>
    • autodiscover.<yourdomain>
    • cpanel.<yourdomain>
    • mail.<yourdomain>
    • webdisk.<yourdomain>
    • webmail.<yourdomain>
  • Paid SSL certificates offer the warranty stated on the package of your choosing in case of certificate compromisation.
  • In paid SSL certificates you can choose for how long you want the certificate issued before you have to manually renew it.
  • Paid SSL certificates offer full support from the Certification Authority in case of hosting provider change, SSL certificate reissue, private key compromisation etc.
  • Paid SSL certificates can be bought and issued in whichever server you like.
  • You can purchase an SSL certificate that offers Extended Validation (EV - Green Bar).
  • You can purchase an SSL certificate that offers wildcard if you have multiple subdomains.
  • Paid SSL certificates do not support any type of subdomain(unless it's a wildcard certificate). Acquiring a paid SSL certificate for a naked domain, additionally supports www.<your_domain> only.
